April 21, 2006 :: Motorola HS700 Bluetooth Hands-Free Device

HS700

A while ago we reviewed the Motorola HS850 Bluetooth device (see: MPX220 Review). We reviewed it with the MPX220 Motorola phone. To save you some reading time, we thought the whole package was awesome. The range of the HS850 was amazing, especially indoors. Overall, Motorola consistently puts out excellent products.

We've received many requests to review the Motorola HS700. Although the device model number would indicate that the HS700 is the predecessor to the HS850, it is not. The HS700 is actually a newer device. So, we thought it prudent to review it. We, at e2g labs, are not affiliated directly or indirectly with any of the manufacturers or products we review. Likewise, we do not sell these products, nor otherwise promote them, nor do we benefit from saying good or bad things about them. So our reviews are generally very fair and unbiased. Simply, we have nothing to gain, nor lose. With that caveat, let's proceed with the review of the HS700.

HS850
The Motorola HS700 redeeming factors are that it is slightly lighter than the HS850. It is also smaller in size and its LED glows in blue, yellow and red, depending upon what it's indicating, as opposed to just glowing blue. So much for the good.

The really bad thing about this device is that it's range is terrible. And there is more bad news that follows. Its power connector is not the traditional Motorola type, so you better check your phone connector to make sure it's the same, if this is important to you. Having multiple chargers generally creates a mess of wires. The HS700 is almost impossible to put on with one hand and it's darn uncomfortable if you are an adult male and your earlobes are proportionately larger than lets say a female or a child. This device is more expensive than the HS850. Its volume capabilities although touted as better than that of the H850, are not. This device can be worn on both ears and employs an identical system in design as the HS850. However, the earpiece is made out of stiffer plastic and is smaller, and it is uncomfortable to wear. The HS700 offers nothing of benefit over the HS850, but slightly smaller size and slightly less weight. Its greater expense is not justified. Its range, or lack thereof, is a real killer. Although we really like almost every Motorola product we reviewed or use, unfortunately, we cannot recommend the HS700.
