October 28, 2005 :: Dell Axim PDA

   The Dell Axim PDA comes with the Windows Pocket PC, as it is currently branded, or actually the CE operating system. This review pertains to both, the X3 and the X5 models. We like the X3 for the price to bang ratio. Both devices come with 802.11b, that's "b", which means your connectivity will not exceed 11 Mbps and more likely will be roughly half that, Bluetooth connectivity, Infrared connectivity, and a cradle. You can also get a USB cable and directly connect your PDA to the PC.

This PDA is a sweet device. It's slim and light and very comfortable to hold and work with. It comes with a full version of Internet Explorer which will display frames and will execute Javascript, VBScript and Java, but for some reason, will not execute Flash. Perhaps future releases of the browser targeting this OS will do that completing the gamut of all useful plugins. It also comes with a full version of Media Player 9 which will play all of your MP3's, WMA's, and other formats, including Mpeg1 and AVI. You actually can view movies you've shot on this device with full audio. All of these devices are fast enough to play full screen movies without any lag what-so-ever, even when encoded in Mpeg1 which requires the CPU to do some work before displaying the images. Get a pair of standard headphones and you've got yourself something like the IPOD on steroids. Need a graphic equalizer, download for free,Winamp for the device, and bingo. This device is much more suited for performing much more serious tasks when you're away from your desktop, than let's say a smartphone. For one, it has a stylus that you can use, for example, to take notes right on the device. And then, beam them across the conference table to your associate without anyone being the wiser. Just make sure no one else has any type of an IR receiver, or you could get yourself in trouble. The battery life of this device is superb. You can even bind your Bluetooth enabled smatphone to this PDA, and use it as a modem. Don't expect great throughput, but in a pinch, you can make the whole thing work for you. Just test it before departing and really needing it to make sure everything is setup correctly. Of course, if you're staying in a hotel equipped with wireless connectivity, hopping onto their network should be a snap. Having pocket Word and pocket Excel and Outlook Express doesn't hurt either. Overall, this is one great device that is as durable, as useful. If you're looking for a PDA, we strongly recommend you give this one a very good look.
